Japanese Chemical Straightening

Japanese chemical straightening has swept throughout Europe and North America and is still the most popular straightening treatment for people with frizzy or curly hair.

It is a multi-step process and can take anywhere between 3 to 6 hours. The steps are as follows:

  1. A protective cream is applied to your scalp as a precaution before the chemical treatment.
  2. A chemical relaxer is used to soften and relax your curls. After enough time passes for the relaxer to take effect, it is washed out of your hair.
  3. A neutralizer is then applied to restore your pH levels and oxidize your hair. This is to protect your hair against breaking from high pH levels.
  4. Conditioners are applied to strengthen and restore oils to your hair.

Post Care: After using chemical relaxers, your hair will be more dry and fragile so it's imperative that you take good care of it.

  • Make sure that you thoroughly wash out all shampoo from your hair when washing. Shampoo can dry out your hair if left after a wash.
  • Use conditioners at least once a week. Conditioners will keep your hair moist and add strength to your hair.
  • Avoid exposing your hair to excess heat from blow-dryers or hot styling tools.
  • Be gentle when combing out tangles.

Because highly processed or coloured hair may be already dried and/or weakened, natural Keratin Complex Smoothing Therapy is a good straightening alternative to Japanese Chemical Straightening if your hair has already been coloured and processed.
